I’ve chosen to include learning styles into my integrative approach to healing because I understand how deeply you can be affected by not having your way of learning be understood throughout your life. Understanding this can lead to greater self-acceptance, resiliency, empowerment and freedom. When you understand your individual way of learning, you can change your whole life.
There has been research in the last 50 years or so that strongly suggests that our educational learning system isn’t a one-size-fits-all model. This model is fundamentally designed to educate through reading and thinking. However, much of the learning styles research has determined that there are other ways of learning that aren’t being addressed such as seeing, hearing, moving and many more of these in combination. Ironically, our education system and workplace are still learning how to address the larger range of learning styles.
Consequently, many people have been forced to adjust, cope and effort to learn throughout their entire lives. More importantly, they may feel depressed or hopeless, have low self-esteem, lack confidence, feel confused and have difficulty adapting to change. This can further lead to feeling isolated, different and alone.
Tragically, many people can then feel stuck and resign themselves to an unnecessary struggle in their personal and professional relationships. All this could happen because they didn’t know the broad effects of their own learning style.
